Waterproofing and insulation
Painting over damp is money thrown away. The water keeps working from behind, lifts the paint into blisters, and within one winter you are back where you started having paid twice. The order that works is to stop the water first and make the surface good afterwards.
On a roof the job starts with where the water goes. Most Cypriot roofs are flat with very little fall, so after rain the water stands instead of running off. We check the outlets, the areas around chimneys and pipes, and the junction with the parapet, because that is where leaks almost always begin. Then the waterproofing goes on as a brushed coating, in a continuous layer with no gaps.
Balconies and basements work differently. On a balcony the water gets in at the joint between the floor and the wall and comes out as a stain on the ceiling below. In a basement the damp rises from the base and carries salts with it, which break the render apart from inside. In both cases the sealing is done where the water enters, not where the stain appears.
A thermal facade is a different job with a different payoff. The insulation goes on the outside of the walls and keeps heat out in summer and in during winter. The air conditioning runs fewer hours and the bill drops. In Cyprus it pays back most on west-facing elevations, where the wall bakes all afternoon.
